How Does an Electric Fireplace Work?

Last Updated: by Andrew S.

Electric fireplaces are the new trend. They’re easy to install, can provide a warm ambiance to your place, and can even save space when compared to a traditional fireplace. Having an electric fireplace is a perfect alternative if your condominium unit or apartment has no existing fireplace. Plus, you don’t have to clean it up!

So, before we move on to how it works, allow me to explain how you should install an electric fireplace.

  1. Prepare the space. Before you buy your fireplace, make sure you have already chosen the space where you’ll place it. Not doing so will cause a conundrum. If it’s an electric wall mount fireplace, then make sure it’ll fit your needs. It’s also advisable to buy one that can be attached to your wall without the need of special tools. For a wall mount fireplace, you’ll only need a mounted fixture to hold it in place. Whether your electric fireplace is an insert or a wall mounted one, make sure you have accurate measurements of the area you’ve selected. This is to avoid having future problems with the size. If it doesn’t fit, it might take some time to replace it. You may need to call the manufacturer and blah blah. The best thing to do is avoid having problems and that you can do by being prepared. Also, remember that an electric fireplace and a bathroom should never go together. So do an electric fireplace and an extension cord. Using the latter will overheat the system. The point of having an electric fireplace is to not have actual fire (which is safer) inside your house, but if you overheat it, then fire might just pay you an unexpected visit.
  2. Install it. Read the manual. Don’t skip this part as there may be precautionary measures you have to follow. Installing also depends on the manufacturer, so you really have to read your precious, free manual. All you have to do is get it out and carefully place it in position. Be cautious when you’re moving it because you might accidentally bump it somewhere and damage it. Don’t be shy to ask for a friend’s help, they’ll come in handy. Once it’s in position, plug it in and turn it on. You can do this with a remote control.
  3. Enjoy the scenery! Now you can enjoy the electric fireplace without the need for logs and dangerous actual fire! You have to remember, though, to unplug it when it’s not in use. Also, do check the status of your outlet to prevent possible malfunction.

So, how does it work?

The answer is simple but majestic. The electric fireplace consists of metal coils. These coils automatically heat up by turning electricity into heat when your unit is plugged in. The fan, also known as a blower motor, is also integrated into the appliance. It sends the heat outward into your lovely room. This fan isn’t loud, so it won’t distract any conversations near the unit. Electric fireplaces are safer since the coils are the only parts that become hot during the process. The flame the unit produces even seems realistic. Thanks to light bulbs or LED that’s bounced around the flame and makes it lifelike. An electric fireplace can have a stand on its own, can also be an insert, while some can be mounted on a wall.
